My oh my! Fishing has been off the charts on Lakes Oahe and Sharpe! Talk about going from good to great—this is more like from great to awesome! I have been guiding steady on both Oahe (lower end, although one day I did end up at the mouth of the Cheyenne) and on Sharpe.

Speaking of Sharpe, you can’t beat it right now for numbers. We’ve had mornings where we have caught upwards of 100 walleye! The sizes range from small (please be careful to release these grower fish for the future—and/or clip the line if they are hooked deep) to nice eaters of 14-20+ inches.

On Oahe: the FLW is coming to town Aug 25-27th and the boys are out pre-fishing, but don’t let that stop you from coming to fish. The bite is great on both Oahe and Sharpe so there are plenty of places to go.

Don’t expect to catch as many ‘eyes on Oahe but the fish are definitely bigger on average, and there is a nice variety of other species to catch as well.

In the last week I have seen two ‘eyes over 32 inches and many in the 20-28” range. We also continue to catch some nice sized pike and smallmouth bass on Oahe.

I have been mostly using bottom bouncers on with a slow death hook; and or some variety of that presentation. However, allot of guys are having success pulling plugs and other livebait presentations are being explored as well. .

Walleye can be found on Oahe literally from 8-60 fow so you have to decide how you want go after them. On Sharpe, I think you could use a cane pole and hunk of hot dog right now—it’s that good. But again, I have been using bottom bouncers w/a slow death and/or spinner because it’s simple and it works. Plugs are working also and I suspect that a jig would work equally well—which is probably the next thing that I will try for fun.

I have only a few open guide dates thru the couple of weeks and fall fishing availability is filling fast, so call right away if you are interested. The fall bite is expected to remain fantastic so if you are considering booking a guide, do so as soon as possible as the word is out about this fantastic fishing and guides with open dates are hard to find.

For additional info including where to go, guide services, ideal lodging accommodations for small to large groups give me a call at 605.695.0194 and I’ll “hook you up.” At any rate, fishing is great so come to Pierre, catch some fish, check out the Pros and the FLW this next week. It’s going to be awesome!

Just like the weather–the bite in Pierre is staying hot! Hopefully (and my guess is it does) stay that way, more or less thru August and into the fall.

I had a ‘special’ guide group over the weekend as my parents, my son and a couple of his friends came to Pierre to fish with me. It was so hot on Saturday that we didn’t go out until evening. On Sunday we got out at daybreak and was back in by 10 a.m. Needless to say, we still managed to get a nice possession limit of eyes with some smallies and cats mixed—all in less than 7 hours on the water.

We used bottom bouncers/crawlers with a plain hook. The wallys ranged from 20-23” on the over’s and the slots from 14-19in. Our best bite was 16-18 fow but we caught fish from 11-35. You’ll want to look around for the best depth as Saturday evening they were deep (as it was flat and calm), compared to Sunday morning where they were much shallower (there was a nice chop on the water). Text book stuff I guess you’d say.

We fished only one area near the dam, although the fish are being caught all over the place. The key is too move around until you find active fish that don’t have a bunch of boats on them. And because these fish are scattered, this is not terribly hard to do you if look around a little, not to mention you don’t have to constantly look adjust your line of travel/speed due to boat traffic.

Anyway, the fishing remains very, very good so do yourself a favor and come to Pierre for some fishing. I have some open guide dates in August as well as Sept-Oct and would love to take you out if you are so inclined. I can take up to four clients in my boat and/or find additional guides if your group is larger than that.

Wow! What a bite going on Lake Oahe! I’ve been fishing the lower end lately and it has been amazing! Went out yesterday morn with some local fishing bud’s (a fellow guide and a “cop’r” (we don’t hold against him…much;-) and we got our limit of nice slots faster than Lindsay Lohan can suck down a big mug of beer!

Our best bite came in 16-18 fow–but we marked ‘eyes from 11-40. We were using bouncers and crawlers but other standard presentations work as these fish are fairly aggressive. Over the weekend I made it out for some night fishing (pulling cranks) and managed quite a few decent slots, including a 29 incher. That fish was a toad as it was very thick all the way through. I managed to get an ok picture as I hurried to make a successful release. She swam off so hopefully she’ll pass along some of those big fish genes and be there next year as a 30+incher.

At any rate, if you are interested in some great fishing and a very affordable outdoor getaway–do yourself a favor and get here! It is some of the best fishing in years and only looks to stay great as the fishery is in great shape with several strong year classes of fish, plus a variety of species and booming baitfish populations. Kudos to our friends at SD GF&P.

For additional info including locations, guide services, ideal lodging accommodations for small to large groups give me a call at 605.695.0194 and I’ll “hook you up.” Like I said, you cannot find a more affordable outdoor adventure in this part of the world and the fishing is world-class to boot!

I spent last week on Lake Sharpe (West Bend area) primarily targeting walleye, using bottom bounces, jigs and pulling cranks. The bottom bouncer bite was steady, as was pulling crankbaits. The bite was slower than normal on the eyes’ and the bite on the big smallies was off. At any rate, we did manage a good catch of slot size walleye but it took some persistence. We marked plenty fish up on the flats in, but they seemed in a neutral to even negative mood. 13-16 fow seemed best. The most active fish were right on the old channel edge, but be prepared to lose some gear if you fish there. Boat control, coupled with a mapping system is critical if you want to drift or troll. There are plenty of trees along the old channel edge. Besides the eyes’ holding tight to the edge, there were some really nice crappie and perch mixed in as well. I definitely noticed increased current in the area, but the boat ramp is in perfect shape and the campground was relatively quiet, which makes it a great time to head to the Pierre area. It’s Primetime and the slower bite last week is bound to give way to a better one as the system stabilizes over the next few days.
Lake Oahe: Sounds like a decent, albeit spotty bite in the Cheyenne and on south and a fair bite farther north, particularly in the Moreau/Akaska area. That means the bite should really turn on in the Whitlocks, then Bushs Landing area any time now as the bigger schools of fish head south. Like I said earlier, it’s Primetime and with a little steady weather, it’s going to get really good. Things seem to be setting up similar to last year were the bite was behind because of the cool temp’s, then all of a sudden it’s like someone throws a switch and get’s great. I haven’t spent much on Oahe yet this season, but starting this week I will be. Look for an Oahe report beginning the first of next week.

Ice fishing in eastern South Dakota has been sporadic but very good in general. I have been out a couple of times and each time come home with some nice walleye and perch. Reports from local anglers are generally good if you can get them to give up their secrets! Getting around continues to be a challenge as there is allot of snow in the area. If some of you out there are looking for some fun hardwater fishing give me a call (605.695.0194) and I will get you the most up to date information I have or can hook you up with a local guide.

Spring Turkey. We still have several dates open for spring turkey hunts in Nebraska and are looking to add new hunts as well. JW says the numbers continue to be very good in his area. We are taking both archery and shotgunners so give us a call if you are interested. To you landowners out there who have some turkeys that you would like to market, give either JW or me a call, as we are always looking to add additional hunts. Demand for these hunts is good if you can find the hunters and we are scheduled to attend winter/spring outdoor shows to promote these trips.

Predator Hunts. My average so far this winter is 100% on coyote hunts. One set, one coyote! That being said, I haven’t been able to go but the hunting is no doubt good as the numbers are up from recent years and generally speaking pressure is light (in the Sandhills). For those of you looking for some fantastic predator hunting give me a call and we can get you set up with a very reasonable predator hunt with exclusive access. Again for you landowners out there who would like to market some predator hunts (coyotes or cats), give me a call and we will see what we can set up for you.

As some of you who know us, we are still in the start-up phase for our company. However, we continue to get inquiry daily and are working to fine tune the aspects of this business and the services to our customers.

For those of you who don’t know us, we provide Land Management, Realty, Outdoor Consulting/Brokering, Marketing & Promotional services for Landowners, Sportsmen, Guides/Outfitters/Lodges. Our system is based on best management practices not only for wildlife such as Quality Deer Management (QDM) principles, but also for best management practices for sustainable ag production as well.

On the ag side of things, we have 40+ combined years experience in all facets of marketing and production ranging from small grain, haying and row crop farming, to beef production from purebred operations to large scale feedlot finishing. Consequently, we consult with landowners not only about improving the quality and income from wildlife (utilizing both consumptive and non-consumptive uses) but also the many varied aspects of ag production and marketing.

As we continue to see the exodus of traditional farm/ranch families off the land due to poor ag economic policy, consolidation of ag markets, etc. we are concerned about that ongoing trend and what we can do to be part of a solution. At the same time we realize that there will be a tremendous amount of farm/ranch succession take place over the next 20 years simply due to demographics of the population. We are committed to being a positive influence on that process. It is going to take land management knowhow and cooperation from the local rural populace to make the best of this situation.

Consequently, we decided that it would be wise to incorporate realty services on top of our land management services. We are developing a network of realtors who have the experience and ability to help this succession take place as seamlessly as possible. For those of you who know me personally, you know that I speak from experience when I say that succession gone wrong can be very expensive and devastating. I now use that experience to help families and landowners avoid a calamity which befell my family. Unfortunately, this all too often occurs when problems or concerns are not addressed and legal bases not covered. In other words, if succession is an issue for your family or operation, don’t put off the serious matter of succession and proper planning for it. It is my expressed desire to use the unfortunate experience that I have had to help other families avoid this issue in theirs. Certainly, the fewer lawyers involved in this process, the better all concerned in the matter will be. I would be glad to discuss my experiences and any way in which we may be a benefit in this regard to your operation.

Since we are on the subject of succession, other past experience has taught us that all too often we see landowners (especially absentee landowners) in lease agreements that simply don’t work. Often there is over (and sometimes under) utilization of grass and as much as I don’t like the term, a “raping and pillaging” mentality when it comes to especially big-game hunting. Traditional hunting leases are typically done on a per acre basis. What this does in general is ensure that whomever has the hunting rights, be it the landowner or someone else, is going to shoot whichever deer suits their fancy, paying little attention to Quality Deer Management principles and the long term results of indiscriminate mangament. What you end up with then is what we have in the sandhills, average deer with a few “big’s” scattered about.

Because the system is based on averages, we end up mostly with average buck size with little regard to selective harvest, and buck to doe ratios out of balance.

We also find that many hunters/landowners don’t know which deer(s) are truly good ones to harvest, and which ones to leave and let grow. Our aim is to clear up that confusion and promote the better “herd bucks” on the properties. This program works especially well if adjacent landowners join together in a year round management program. Then we (POA) as your agent, go out and advertise/promote these properties in a cost effective manner to maximize you potential return. The really neat part of this is that it only cost you something if we book something for you. And, it is totally up to you if you want to market one deer (hunt) or several and in which manner to do it. We would love to have the opportunity to speak with you about our program and if we may be of some benefit to you.

Greetings and holiday wishes to you and yours on this turkey day. We hope this message finds you, and finds you well.
Welcome to the inaugural edition of weekly commentary at Primetime Outdoor Adventures. We are proud to announce the launch of our new company, dedicated to the service of connecting Sportsmen, Landowners, Guides/Outfitters/Lodges in a way that not only maximizes our natural resources, but conserves them as well.
In our model we create “win-win” scenarios by customizing unique trip packages, with customized property management, which in turn provides world-class trips utilizing world-class guides/outfitter/lodges. With this new and unique service, we get expected results and satisfied customers. Our website is still under construction for a short time yet, but we anticipate completion soon. You will find a detailed breakdown of our services if you click-on those words on the homepage.

A little history:
Growing up in farm and ranch country our parents and grandparents instilled a love of the land upon us. Having this ag background and outdoor upbringing has created unique knowledge in production agriculture and outdoor pursuits. Because of this, over time we gradually conceived this new model in land/resource management, realty and recreational services. This company is founded on the basis that there is a better way to manage these resources thus providing better results for our customers.
For the sportsmen using our services, it means that you get what you pay for when you book with us. We represent only the best. We will not book you with someone that we don’t know and have personally approved. Our trips are not “wholesale” type trips that you have been on in the past. Many of us learned this expensive lesson the hard way. You pay top price, but get average (or less than average) results. Essentially, this doubles or triples the cost of your trophy. So, whether we book you into one of personally leased operations, or a representative operation, you choose a “primetime” slot(s) that best suits you and you know what to expect as you book the trip. We have developed, implemented and incorporated this system with landowners to produce world-class game and work with local guides/outfitters who know the land and how to ensure first-class adventures for the sportsmen. In other works, when you book with Primetime you get what you pay for!

Highlights 2010’ season:
Spring: Our turkey numbers are at an all time high and availability continues to grow. Last spring we took some really good toms and this season will be no different. If you are looking for a fun and unique Merriam hunt, give us a call. Our birds in the Sandhills move from tree belt to tree belt which makes for really fun hunting. It’s kind of like spot and stalk meets traditional calling. We find the birds then figure out how to set up on them. If you have never hunted turkeys this way before, you are in for a treat. Once the birds are found and the set up made, often it’s only a scratch or two on the call and they come running! Some of our spring turkey hunters also like to take in some coyote calling and/or spring walleye fishing and we accommodate that as well.

Summer: This last season on Lake Oahe/Lake Sharpe, South Dakota was nothing short of amazing! The walleye fishing is as good as anywhere in North America and there are good numbers of big fish as well. The smallmouth fishery has become world-class and the salmon fishery above the dam continues to improve. If you are interested in a affordable family vacation, corporate getaway, or just a fun trip, we can customize a package that works for you. Because we work with various guides and lodging locations on the river, we move around to keep you on the bite!
Fall: This fall we have had a great deer season so far. Our area has again produced record class whitetails and mule deer. We continue to work with landowners to increase the number of high quality bucks possessing good genetics and potential. When these animals reach their potential at a mature age, they are offered to you. Because of this, plus the fact that we have both mulies and whitetail in abundance, the Cornhusker State is soon to lose its “sleeper” status and become known a the place to go for great deer and mixed bag hunting. We are confident that if you give us a try you will find that our deer hunting rivals that found anywhere. The final piece of this puzzle is that we have a year round management program, and then working with our local guides to put you on these mega-trophies when the fall comes.

Our grouse and prairie chicken numbers are good this fall in Nebraska and the pheasant hunting is great as always in South Dakota. The ducks and geese have been moving thru in good numbers, the coyotes are now “prime” and in abundance. We have a couple of late season trophy deer hunts yet available (see main page) and are now offering next seasons packages.
For those of you looking for an escape into some wintertime wonderland fun, consider a little “wiley-dog,” coyote calling excitement! Man! There is nothing like calling coyotes after a three day blow. Our current record stands at 7 coyotes in one day (some bad shooting there as 13 came into range) but maybe you can come and top it? We try to set up our coyote hunts for “Primetime.” That is just after a big storm when they are really on the hunt looking for food. That’s when we help you load the fur shed! We also have late season waterfowl available and are currently booking for spring turkey and spring/summer walleye fishing in Nebraska and South Dakota (Lake Oahe/Lake Sharpe). Go to our main page to see the current listings.
