Aug 23rd Fishing Report
My oh my! Fishing has been off the charts on Lakes Oahe and Sharpe! Talk about going from good to great—this is more like from great to awesome! I have been guiding steady on both Oahe (lower end, although one day I did end up at the mouth of the Cheyenne) and on Sharpe.
Speaking of Sharpe, you can’t beat it right now for numbers. We’ve had mornings where we have caught upwards of 100 walleye! The sizes range from small (please be careful to release these grower fish for the future—and/or clip the line if they are hooked deep) to nice eaters of 14-20+ inches.
On Oahe: the FLW is coming to town Aug 25-27th and the boys are out pre-fishing, but don’t let that stop you from coming to fish. The bite is great on both Oahe and Sharpe so there are plenty of places to go.
Don’t expect to catch as many ‘eyes on Oahe but the fish are definitely bigger on average, and there is a nice variety of other species to catch as well.
In the last week I have seen two ‘eyes over 32 inches and many in the 20-28” range. We also continue to catch some nice sized pike and smallmouth bass on Oahe.
I have been mostly using bottom bouncers on with a slow death hook; and or some variety of that presentation. However, allot of guys are having success pulling plugs and other livebait presentations are being explored as well. .
Walleye can be found on Oahe literally from 8-60 fow so you have to decide how you want go after them. On Sharpe, I think you could use a cane pole and hunk of hot dog right now—it’s that good. But again, I have been using bottom bouncers w/a slow death and/or spinner because it’s simple and it works. Plugs are working also and I suspect that a jig would work equally well—which is probably the next thing that I will try for fun.
I have only a few open guide dates thru the couple of weeks and fall fishing availability is filling fast, so call right away if you are interested. The fall bite is expected to remain fantastic so if you are considering booking a guide, do so as soon as possible as the word is out about this fantastic fishing and guides with open dates are hard to find.
For additional info including where to go, guide services, ideal lodging accommodations for small to large groups give me a call at 605.695.0194 and I’ll “hook you up.” At any rate, fishing is great so come to Pierre, catch some fish, check out the Pros and the FLW this next week. It’s going to be awesome!

I’ve been fishing the lower end lately and it has been amazing! Went out yesterday morn with some local fishing bud’s (a fellow guide and a “cop’r” (we don’t hold against him…much;-) and we got our limit of nice slots faster than Lindsay Lohan can suck down a big mug of beer!
(West Bend area) primarily targeting walleye, using bottom bounces, jigs and pulling cranks. The bottom bouncer bite was steady, as was pulling crankbaits. The bite was slower than normal on the eyes’ and the bite on the big smallies was off. At any rate, we did manage a good catch of slot size walleye but it took some persistence. We marked plenty fish up on the flats in, but they seemed in a neutral to even negative mood. 13-16 fow seemed best. The most active fish were right on the old channel edge, but be prepared to lose some gear if you fish there. Boat control, coupled with a mapping system is critical if you want to drift or troll. There are plenty of trees along the old channel edge. Besides the eyes’ holding tight to the edge, there were some really nice crappie and perch mixed in as well. I definitely noticed increased current in the area, but the boat ramp is in perfect shape and the campground was relatively quiet, which makes it a great time to head to the Pierre area. It’s Primetime and the slower bite last week is bound to give way to a better one as the system stabilizes over the next few days.
Lake Oahe: Sounds like a decent, albeit spotty bite in the Cheyenne and on south and a fair bite farther north, particularly in the Moreau/Akaska area. That means the bite should really turn on in the Whitlocks, then Bushs Landing area any time now as the bigger schools of fish head south. Like I said earlier, it’s Primetime and with a little steady weather, it’s going to get really good. Things seem to be setting up similar to last year were the bite was behind because of the cool temp’s, then all of a sudden it’s like someone throws a switch and get’s great. I haven’t spent much on Oahe yet this season, but starting this week I will be. Look for an Oahe report beginning the first of next week.
